How MoveIt Releases Relate to ROS Distributions

MoveIt is released as a set of packages into ROS distributions. Two separate organizations are involved:

ROS distributions (for example ROS Jazzy Jalisco or ROS Lyrical Luth) are created, named, packaged, and maintained by the Open Source Robotics Alliance (OSRA), a program of the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF). OSRA decides each distribution's release date, supported platforms, and end-of-life (EOL) date. The binary packages are built by the Open Robotics buildfarm and served from the ROS package repositories; neither is run by the MoveIt project.
MoveIt releases (for example "MoveIt 2 Jazzy") are versions of the MoveIt source code, maintained by the MoveIt project, that the MoveIt maintainers submit to a given ROS distribution through the standard ROS release process.

The MoveIt project does not control when ROS distributions are released or retired. For authoritative information on ROS distributions, see the official ROS distributions page.

MoveIt Releases by ROS Distribution

The table below lists the ROS distributions that the MoveIt project currently releases into, or has most recently supported. The release and EOL dates are those of the ROS distribution, as set by OSRA, and are reproduced here for convenience; if they differ from the official ROS distributions page, the official page is correct. Each ROS distribution name links to that distribution's official documentation.

Supported Platforms

Each ROS distribution's supported operating systems and dependency versions are defined by OSRA and listed in that distribution's documentation, linked from the table above. MoveIt binaries for a distribution target the same platforms.

Future Distributions

OSRA currently releases a new ROS distribution roughly once per year, in May. The MoveIt project aims to release into each new ROS distribution at or shortly after its release. For the official schedule of upcoming ROS distributions, see the ROS distributions page.

Rolling

ROS Rolling Ridley is OSRA's continuously updated development distribution. It can receive breaking changes at any time, and new stable ROS distributions are created from snapshots of it. See the official Rolling documentation for details.

MoveIt 2 Rolling is built from MoveIt's main branch. Most users should use the MoveIt release for the most recent stable ROS distribution instead.
